Helping Teens Adjust & Succeed with Hybrid Learning
Succeeding in school is often a huge challenge for students with ADHD. Even in a normal school environment, the effort required to stay focused, keep up with assignments, and manage time effectively can take a toll on students’ motivation and create stress for the entire family. Add to that the complication of online learning, or on-campus/online learning hybrid, and the challenges ADHD students face become even more exacerbated. Join us for this special presentation with Dr. Maggie Wray to learn some of the top reasons smart but scattered students struggle in school and how to help them succeed in online or hybrid learning environments!
Dr. Maggie Wray, Ph.D. is a certified ADHD Coach & Academic Life Coach with a Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell and a Bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics from Princeton. Am I preparing my child for college, or a career?
In the United Kingdom, schools start discussing career options in elementary school. Is this too young for children to start thinking of a career path? Actually, elementary school and high school may be the perfect time for the ADHD brain that is always asking “Why?” A better understanding of how school relates to career can help academic performance. Changing the “end goal” from college to career also opens up many potential paths for the ADHD child. This mindset can take some of the pressure off excelling in every class and allow the child to focus on their strengths.
Tom Bergeron is co-founder of Inventive Labs, a career and business incubator focused on adults with ADHD, dyslexia, and ASD. The Lab runs a hands-on program helping individuals find their path forward by exploring career, school and entrepreneurship options. Tom has worked at various start-up companies helping identify how new products fit into their market. He now uses the same concepts he learnt in business to help individuals find their “market fit”. Tom experienced many challenges in school, but by charting his own path he found success in business. He noticed the traits that hold some individuals back in school can actually be their advantage in the workplace. It is his belief that individuals with ADHD tend to be the best and brightest entrepreneurs, artists, designers, inventors, and scientists. He is now committed to helping the next generation find their path forward and launch their careers. He believes it isn’t a race to the finish line, but a journey of learning and exploration to find a livelihood that offers fulfillment and success. Prior to Inventive Labs, Tom worked for a number of startup companies, heading up sales, marketing, and product development teams. More information is available online at www.inventivelabs.org.

Who me?! The Oblivious Kid. Why kids with ADHD are so oblivious to their actions.
What appears to be a natural consequence to a behavior is often lost on your child with ADHD. Shouldn’t he “get it” that putting fingers in someone’s face will make them annoyed? Shouldn’t she realize that blowing off her teacher multiple times will make him not available? Your daughter can’t be bothered to reach out to friends for weeks, and yet expects to resume where they left off. According to the Laws of Science, repeated activities should predict outcomes. In this presentation, Caroline Maguire, M. Ed., PCC shares insight into the mind of your child. These kids aren’t necessarily lonely, although many are. They have low self-awareness, and fail to understand the social world. She will offer actionable steps to help your child read social cues, body language, tone, and facial expressions. She will advise on how to help your child be the first to reach out to a potential new friend and how to embrace responsibility for their actions. Let’s help your son finally connect the dots between his actions and his social sphere.

This is a skill we all need, as most of us lose more often than win. Rehearse what level of reaction is expected and what it feels like when someone over-reacts. What would these reactions look like to her, and what could be a better response.

Understanding Coexisting Conditions in Children and Adolescents with ADHD
Understanding Coexisting Conditions in Children and Adolescents with ADHD. This presentation will discuss the importance of identifying and addressing the numerous potential conditions that can coexist with ADHD. ADHD is a foundational disorder that frequently occurs with a number of medical, sleep, neurodevelopmental, sensory processing, fetal substance exposure, psychological, and trauma conditions. These can worsen ADHD, or cause ADHD-like symptoms when true ADHD does not exist. Between 67-80% of clinic-referred children with ADHD have at least one additional disorder, and up to 50% have two or more other conditions. When coexisting conditions are not identified, effective treatment typically doesn’t occur and families and clinicians may experience confusion with only partial progress while challenges persist.
Gene Carroccia, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and author who has extensive experience working with individuals with ADHD, as well as other conditions, including psychological trauma and maltreatment. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Delaware and obtained his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois in 1998. For over twenty years, he has evaluated and treated hundreds of children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD. Dr. Carroccia works at a large not-for-profit health care system as a vice president of behavioral health care services. Previously, for many years, he supervised doctoral psychology interns and was the director of training of an accredited doctoral clinical psychology internship program. Dr. Carroccia is the author of two ADHDology books, Treating ADHD/ADD in Children and Adolescents: Solutions for Parents and Clinicians and Evaluating ADHD in Children and Adolescents: A Comprehensive Diagnostic Screening System. He was also the editor of the clinical workbook Treating Sexual Abuse and Trauma with Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults with Developmental Disabilities, published by Charles C. Thomas. He resides in the suburbs of Chicago with his wife and two sons. ADHDology: Assess. Address. Success. Visit www.adhdology.com.
Article: Understanding Coexisting Conditions for Children and Teens with ADHD — This original article describes the importance of understanding and identifying coexisting conditions in children and teens with ADHD, and can help families to address these concerns. Because ADHD is a foundational disorder that frequently coexists with other conditions, parents, educators, and clinicians should be concerned if children and teens have 1 or more other conditions that may worsen ADHD and limit their progress. Between 67 to 80% of clinic-referred children and 80% or more of adults with ADHD have at least one additional disorder, up to 50% have two or more other conditions. This article presents the most common coexisting conditions, and also provides a comprehensive list of these, including medical, sleep, psychological, substance use, trauma, neurodevelopmental, sensory processing, and fetal substance exposure conditions. Parents can use this information to discuss their concerns about addressing coexisting conditions with their providers.

You Mean They're NOT Really Procrastinating? Motivation & Ambiguity
What impact does ambiguity have on motivation and procrastination? You might be surprised at the answer. Think about it. If you don’t know what to do, isn’t it more productive to do something else, or just escape to play Xbox? Ambiguity comes from a lack of clarity because you just don’t know or because you can’t hold it in your working memory. These challenges impact adults but have a greater impact on ADHD kids who have not developed problem-solving skills and whose executive functioning brains aren’t as developed. Join us for insight to understand motivation and procrastination through the lens of ambiguity and how ADHD children can thrive when they gain clarity. We’ll share mindsets to help you help your kids.

Nutritional Lithium for the Treatment of ADHD
When it comes to ADHD, it is easy to focus on attentional deficits to the exclusion of other symptoms. ADHD patients often struggle with irritability and aggression, symptoms that can impact social functioning, stymie therapeutic trajectories, and disrupt a healthy home dynamic. Fortunately, low-dose nutritional lithium – an essential, natural mineral with clinically proven neuroprotective properties – is effective in addressing the irritability and aggression that often appears alongside attentional issues but is too often overlooked in ADHD patients.
Join renowned functional psychiatry expert Dr. James Greenblatt in exploring the incredible properties and therapeutic potentials of low-dose lithium for ADHD.
A pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, James M. Greenblatt, MD, has treated patients since 1988. After receiving his medical degree and completing his psychiatry residency at George Washington University, Dr. Greenblatt completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical School. Dr. Greenblatt currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer at Walden Behavioral Care in Waltham, MA and serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine. In April of 2017, Dr. Greenblatt was inducted into the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame by the International Society of Orthomolecular Medicine. He is author of 7 books, including Finally Focused, Nutritional Lithium: A Cinderella Story, Answers to Anorexia, Integrative Medicine for Alzheimer’s, Integrative Medicine for Binge Eating, and Integrative Medicine for Depression, and co-editor with Kelly Brogan, MD of the textbook Integrative Therapies for Depression. It is important to first identify the best popular video games and apps as teaching tools. However, technology alone is not enough. This discussion will provide clear and pragmatic strategies for generalizing skills and making game-based learning into real-world skills.

Is Medication the Only Answer? What to Do When Meds Don’t Work
Medical treatment for ADHD fails far too often, not because of the drugs themselves, but how they are managed. Patients often suffer from missed brain and body diagnoses that create a variety of reactions to ADHD medications. The too frequent result of these challenges: diagnostic confusion, imbalanced treatment and over or under medication. Patient treatment can dramatically improve when providers use the most up-to-date available methods derived from contemporary neuroscience – methods assembled from hard data, clinical experience and laboratory research. The brain is connected to the body, and without proper over-all health care, many medications simply will not work as expected.

Choosing the correct ADHD medication for your child can make or break effective treatment strategies, even those outside the pharmaceutical realm. Not only is it challenging to choose among the dizzying array of meds: stimulants, non-stimulants, second-tier medications, meds for co-existing conditions – it can be equally difficult to fine tune the dosage for maximum effectiveness.
In this candid interview, you’ll hear valuable advice you may never have gleaned from other sources. Dr. Dodson “tells it like it is” from titrating stimulants to effective medication for ADHD “sidecar” issues such as Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. Don’t miss this important session.

What Your ADHD Kids Want You to Know
I was diagnosed with ADD at the age of 12 and prescribed Ritalin. Month after month I visited a psychiatrist, and the medication helped SO MUCH. As I got older, though, I learned to be ashamed of my medication; and at 32, my life was falling apart despite taking it, and I realized medication wasn’t enough. I’ll talk about my journey to understand my brain and build an ADHD toolbox to support it — and the unexpected “tool” I found that mattered most of all.

Let’s talk about how to help kids receive support in ways that address both their needs and their concerns, and how to help them be involved in the process so they can learn to advocate for themselves now, and in the future.
