By reviewing key elements of executive functioning underpinning why “fibbing” occurs and strategies to reduce their impact to the individual The aim of this discussion is to review practical solutions to support people with ADHD and their significant others when under pressure. Understanding that the fib response is possibly triggered often by “primal fear”, supporting all involved how to address this issue and how to resolve reducing harm to the relationships at risk. Responses may include the need for “self-preservation” “protection of self-esteem – self and others” “deflection” and “extension” can help us understand the need of the person under pressure.

Monica Hassall is an ADHD and EF Coach, from Australia.
